Nicky and her Nikon

A historic day

...and not in a good way. I woke up very early to hear the results of the EU referendum and was shocked to learn that the results were to leave the EU. I then spent the next 2 hours in near disbelief reading all about it on the BBC news and also watching the news on TV. Of course the pound plummeted within minutes of the results being announced, of course Farage was caught denying he would allocate EU costs of £350 million to the NHS - what did the people who voted to leave the EU think would happen? They have successfully screwed trade relationships with Europe, caused the pound to weaken beyond any hope of short term recovery, have caused the economic recession to worsen, and the economists are predicting a loss in GDP growth of 2%. Sadly, it will also lead to the break up of the UK and I rather liked Scotland being part of the UK.

Thanks to the numpties who fell for the Brexit propaganda, or who had their own xenophobic fears for this country, my boys now face a very different future. Adam has already had an email from Cambridge University to say they are trying to re-negotiate their funding with Europe - they stand to lose funding of £100 million per annum from Europe, and the future of UK science has been compromised due to this loss of freedom of movement of scientists between the UK and Europe. The extra photo shows how the boys feel about the referendum result!

This day is important and so I had to record this in my journal - I hope to look back in a year's time and see that things were not as bad as they seem today, because right now it is looking very unstable and messy.
