Diary of an Edinburgher

Hospital Day Five

My Wee Helium Voiced Lady is making progress, she gets a lot of attention, and can't resist summoning every passing member of staff on some small pretext, like moving something on her table or, several times a day, 'I need a wee wee!' I do not approve of the nurses who roll their eyes and grudgingly go to her, or tell her to be patient, they're attending to someone else, whether they are or not. She needs reassurance all the time. She is just a wee frightened old lady. subtext: and I hope I'm never in that position

There was a crowd of visitors at the next bed this afternoon, so I couldn't use my chair to sit up and do my exercises, so I went across and sat beside my Wee Lady, and we had a chat, which is difficult - she's very deaf, and you have to repeat everything many times. She can lift her operation leg away up much higher than I can, which she found hilarious when we did it together. (Would have made an excellent blip).

I downloaded some Radio 4 podcasts, which are good for closing my eyes, and shutting out loud visitors. Why does everyone shout in hospitals?
-The New Elizabethans (Ed Hilary, Lennon & McCartney, Germain Greer, Tony Blair, David Bowie)
-The Moral Maze (historical sex abuse, the EU Referendum) and
-In the Psychiatrist's Chair (Paul Theroux, Spike Milligan, Anita Roddick). Some of them are quite old, as you may have noticed a few people who are no longer with us. Plenty to keep me going.

I'm progressing well with my recovery, but they're not allowing me out yet till my blood is right.

Lunch: breaded cod, chips and mushy peas, then fruit pie and custard.
