CannyScot's Day

Visit to Loch Leven Castle

A bright day with light cloud and sunny spells.

We decided to take a trip to Loch Leven for a walk/scooter ride round the northern part of the Loch and then a boat trip over to the Castle on one of the small Islands.

Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here between June 1567 and May 1568. It only took us 10 minutes on the little Ferry but it would have taken a lot longer to row in those earlier days. It is a lovely Island but a year on it, with all the gales that suddenly spring up - and no central heating in the Castle - would not have been much fun for Mary.

On the way back there was a bit of excitement. An American woman had canoed across, with a strong wind behind her, but then realised that she would never be able to paddle back into the wind. For a time she was panicking. The incoming Ferry Captain kindly rescued her by towing the canoe across and giving her a lift in the Ferry. On the way back he drew near to her companions to let them know she was safe.

A lovely day out and well worth a visit - if you would like to see more photos of our trip have a look at my Flikr Album here.
