Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind . . .
We zoomed down the highway tonight to find a ghost . . . at the old Hamilton Asylum for the Insane, built in 1874 as a dumping ground for 'inebriates'. In 1890, Century Manor, the part of the asylum shown in this picture, became a place of detention for Ontario's criminally insane. The huge complex was later renamed Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital and was closed in 1956. Read This And This.
It's supposed to be haunted but we didn't see any ghosts behind the barred and boarded windows. Jools tried to create an eerie atmosphere, standing behind me emitting a series of blood-curdling ghostly wails as I shot pictures. But it had no effect - I've heard them all before . . . although they did unnerve a couple of raccoons who bolted from a nearby tree and dashed around in circles.
