Oswestry Castle Dig
After bowling I called at Oswestry Castle Archaeological Dig which is happening for a few days to coincide with the Heritage Open Days.
There's not much left of the castle but the castle mound with it's view all around the town would have been a good viewpoint. The town has changed hands between English and Welsh ten times so there's been a lot of fighting in the area.
The site has been occupied for 1000 years and the castle was originally a wooden building but under the turf and Victorian cobbles they have discovered stone walls 8 ft thick. The archaeologists are trying to work out the plan of the castle and looking for any finds but there's only funding for a few days each year so it's a slow job.
They don't know why it was demolished but think it was either the Roundheads in battle or the townspeople took the stone for building their houses.
