Octopus

That's the name of the design on this runner I bought from a stall on the walls in Dubrovnik. You can see it hanging on the gate in this shot in my Flickr album here.

It is called Konavle embroidery and is one of many designs traditionally used on the breast and sleeves of womens' garments in Croatia.  Strictly symmetrical and geometric shapes were used and were originally worked in silk grown in each Konavle house. Konavle is a town south of Dubrovnik and traditional costumes are still made there.
I really liked the design and colour and the girl selling them seemed really into the work. It will be a nice reminder of the lovely place it came from
