The bridge in the Chinese Garden at Biddulph Grange was inspired by the Willow Pattern on plates. James Bateman was a keen plant collector and, with his friend, constructed a marvellous garden in early Victorian times for his collection of plants from throughout the world using typical landscape features or sculptures to represent the countries. He also constructed the first stumpery featuring upturned tree roots and ferns. There is always so much to see there at almost every time of year but the trees were looking good in their autumnal colours.
