More newborns
While feeding out this morning, we noticed that two cows were in the early stages of labour. I went back this afternoon to check whether they had had their calves, and this is what I saw. These two heifer calves hadn't long been born, and I'd say only just got on their feet. The Jersey calf was a bit confused - she couldn't find her mum, so decided to have a drink from the other mum, who surprisingly didn't
mind. The mum of the Jersey wasn't too far away, and eventually came to claim her baby.
Occasionally we have mismatched cows and calves, and sometimes it is a matter of a bit of detective work to make sure we have the right mum with the right calf. Quite often we have cows claiming calves, when they haven't even calved, and may be a few weeks from calving.
While taking this picture, I lost the cap from my lens. Despite hunting for it for about half an hour, I gave up - it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
After milking tonight we shifted the two newly calved cows into fresh grass, and I had the boys searching the paddock for my cap. What a mission! While rounding up the calves, son C yelled that he found it, all covered in mud, and obviously having been stood on by a cow. Luckily, after a bit of wash, the cap was as good as
new!
