Flying fish
Well, no, not quite - it's a sea trout attempting to jump to the higher level of the Wooler Water at the ford at Haughhead, so it can swim upstream to spawn. It rained very heavily last night and the ford, which was completely dry not long ago, is now under a raging torrent. Unfortunately, didn't quite manage to capture the whole fish in this shot...
Tom has come to stay for the weekend so, after some chores this morning, I went to pick him up at Berwick station at lunchtime. Back home for lunch (including some very tasty local cheeses), then out to watch the fish jumping at Haughhead and at Hedgeley Bridge (where there's a fish pass, but we saw no fish), and for a short walk by the lakes at Branton and a mooch round the antique shop at Hedgeley. The light was fading rapidly as we drove home.
After a meal of MrM's delicious home-made lamb curry followed by steamed lemon-curd sponge (my contribution), it was an evening of good red wine (which Tom had brought with him) and a quirky film - Troll Hunters - courtesy Tom's Netflix.
Unfortunately, Tom seems to have missed the good weather, but we managed to dodge the showers this afternoon. 'Twas cold though - the first dusting of snow on Hedgehope and the Cheviot today (a week earlier than last year), and sleet in Wooler for a short time this morning. Winter seems to be taking hold...
