Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
Today's the day ........................ to carry water
This amazing structure is the longest and highest aquaduct in Britain, a Grade 1 listed building and a World Heritage Site.
It carries the Llangollen Canal over the valley of the River Dee in Wrexham County Borough in north east Wales. It was designed and built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop - and took 10 years to build being completed in 1805. It consists of a cast iron trough supported 126 ft above the river on iron arched ribs carried on eighteen hollow masonry pillars. As well as the canal, there's enough room for a pedestrian walkway - so if you have a head for heights, you could take a stroll across. You can just about make out some people walking on the extra.
I've been across it twice - on a canal narrowboat - and I was scared rigid both times ..........................
