Southend Pier

This morning we went for a short stroll along the seafront at Thorpe Bay. Heavy rain showers were forecast for the day, but we got away with just a couple of light showers.

Today's blip is the view from Thorpe Bay towards the head of Southend Pier. Dating from 1887 it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. In my childhood days it was wonderful, but a huge fire in 1976 destroyed much of the pier head and since then it has suffered a series of further calamities.

It will never be quite what it was in its heyday, but it remains one of the best landmarks in Southend.
