Cluny Museum, Paris

France's National Cluny Museum of the Middle Ages is constructing a large addition, with these lighthearted figures and inscriptions along the fence surrounding it. We were there to see a fabulous exhibition on France's Merovingian period.  The Merovingian dynasty ruled the Franks from ca. 457 to 751, with Clovis its most famous member (481–511). I was most struck by the figures; the two in the extra  (6th-7th centuries) are probably the two thieves crucified with Christ, and as such would be their earliest sculptural rendition  in Western art.
