The Powder Mill
A better day at work today and the sun was shining on us so what could be better. Tonight after my tea, it was back down Roslin Glen but this time I walked along the Powder Mill.
When the war was on, this part of the Glen was owned by ICI and they made the gun powder for the bomb factory which was further up the road on the way to Rosslyn Lea Station. My great grandfather was the gatesman at the powder mill and it was his job to let all the lorries in and out and make sure no trespassers got in. When you walk along there now, there are still some remains of the buildings where the powder was made and stored.
When you walk right along, you come to a weir which looks beautiful and I thought that could be my blip but then, when I walked over the bridge I noticed this house, or what's left of it. I phoned my mum for some information on it and she said it was one of the houses where the gun powder was made.
So that is the blip tonight, all the history attached to a small community down a Glen makes you wonder how many people knew what was being produced right under their noses.
