Hokitika
My friends Michelle and Gavin have a campervan and I joined them for breakfast at their campsite. Then we drove south to Hokitika. Ok, this is a very touristy shot but I liked it! The west coast gets a lot of driftwood washed up on the beach and, as well as this town sign, there’d recently been a driftwood art competition. All the sculptures were still on the beach. The extra is of one of the winners, named ‘the Artist’.
After lunch we went to Hokitika Gorge. The weather wasn’t great so the water was grey rather than blue but it was still pretty and with all the recent rain, water levels were high and the river was very fast moving. (That didn’t stop a couple of idiots jumping off rocks into the river without being able to see how deep it was or if there were submerged rocks.) We then drove further on towards Franz Josef Glacier. My friends in Christchurch lent me a tent so we camped on the coast about 30 km before the glacier.
