Helter-skelter

Humbling.

Today I took the kids to a 'Microscope Fun' session at Wakehurst and they really enjoyed it, especially seeing all the patterns on things, like poppy seeds, that look perfectly round and smooth to us normally.

While browsing in the shop afterwards I bumped into one of the Wakehurst teachers, a highly experienced and respected Kew scientist and author, who out of the blue offerred to give me a reference for my PGCE application. She said she'd seen me teaching (I've worked with her several times) and how good I was with the children there and I was just gobsmacked (sorry, can't think of any other word to describe it!). I can't tell you how it feels to have such an amazing educator say something like that, obviously very flattering but, more importantly, also very humbling to think that someone like that - no matter how well I've come to know her over the past couple of years - would take the time to bother about me. She's such a lovely person.

I've been getting quite down trying to finish the 'Personal Statement' I need to submit with my PGCE application as it's so important - probably the only thing that will decide whether or not I even get to the interview stage. Everything I write seems to be a dreadful cliché and I currently sound a bit like a cross between Mother Teresa and Sir David Attenborough (so there's just a tad to tone down, ha, ha!). As you can imagine, though, today's lovely surprise has now given me the confidence boost I need to get it done.
