Vaguely Marvellous

Upside Down

What a fab day. We took ourselves off to Kensington where we visited the new Design Museum, Holland Park, my dad's childhood home and the Roof Gardens.

The Design Museum: beautiful building, but I found the exhibitions a bit dull. My mum thinks it's because it didn't pay enough attention. Probs fair enough. It's very photogenic though (see extras).

Holland Park: I can't believe I've never been there before, we had lunch in the café. One of those amazing oases of calm you find in London.

Childhood home: so posh! Who knew? He spent the first 10 years of his life in a huge fifth floor flat right next to Holland Park. A brilliant discussion with the children followed about how come we haven't got enough money for a flat in Kensington..I had to explain that my grandparents lost most of it buying land in Kenya in the 1950s....

The Roof Gardens: we have a photo of me, aged about 2 and a half, taken on the Roof Gardens above one of the old department stores in High Street Kensington (Derry and Tom's), so we went to see if we could find the spot. The gardens are free to go into, though you have to show ID to get in, and they have famingoes and ducks and all sorts. Disappointingly we couldnt recreate the photo though, it's changed a lot in 40+ years.

To top it all off, we took the kids to see LaLa Land: not what I expected, but brilliant.

An all round brilliant day, finished off with the traditional ridiculously late supper we always have when we come to stay.
