When less is Moore
We went to the local Lightbox community art gallery for the Henry Moore exhibition this morning. This is a lovely space. They have hosted many exhibitions since they started a decade ago, and it is perfectly suited to something that needs you to focus quietly and intently on a few items.
Moore was a 20th century icon, a man who knew Picasso and Nash but who was never a remote member of an artistic elite; he turned postmodern sculpture into accessible art and his deep connection with natural forms (such as wood and bones) and archetypes (such as mother and child) means that his work is of a very fundamental nature rather than bound to the epoch in which he lived. This exhibition is so impressive. If you live anywhere within travelling distance of Woking you should try and see it. Oh and the volunteers are lovely, chatty and well informed.
As for the rest - we went for breakfast in Bills with Top Gun and The Yoga Mama (see extra) which I have to say was really good. Did a bit of shopping. The drizzle was constant and dull but didn't detract from the rest of the day.
It is now only 2.30 (but feels like teatime) so I still have the rest of the day for a bit of DIY and cleaning ... although I am now inspired to create something artistic in my living room ...
Postscript
We watched Doctor Strange tonight which I quite enjoyed although I am not sure about Benedict Cumberbatch's American accent. That may have been the strangest bit of the whole movie. Bit bored with people going off to Nepal for enlightenment, it was all a bit too much like Christian Bale in Batman Begins. Tilda Swinton was striking though, she even looks good when she is out of her own body...
