Birdwatching
A bit of a road trip today, up to Castro Verde in the Alentajo region.
This is an area of wide grassland Serra and is home to a great population of Great Bustard. Europe's heaviest bird, yes they can fly! We saw plenty at the LPN reserve areas, also little bustard, lesser kestrel, black bellied sand grouse and some spectacular sightings of Imperial Eagle.
It is really quite a special area and only 100km drive.
The only problem was the little town of Castro Verde. We decided to drive home on the main road rather than the motorway but there were no helpful road signs to get us onto it, so we went round the houses several times before finally resorting to google maps and the friendly satnav. The way onto the bypass was one of those round in a loop and under the road type approaches that you could never find if you didn't know the way, so we only feel a little bit stupid!
It was still worth it!
