Problematic S's

This lovely milestone is just along from the house. I haven't been able to date it from research so far but it is thought that it was placed there to direct visitors from the Cartmel Priory to either one of the two major market towns of the time, Hawkshead and Kendal. It is likely that the stonemason was probably illiterate and obviously had a particular problem with S's; one is backwards and the other two are either detached from the end of the word or falling over.

The image in extras shows both sides.

The milestone gets a coat of paint each year and one year the decorator took it upon himself to correct the 'S' in Hawkshead. On noticing the correction the locals immediately uncorrected the correction. The milestone is much loved by the local villagers.
