.. are  quite incredible looking creatures which are endemic to New Zealand.  There are 70 species of which 16 are endangered.  Some of the most endangered species are now only found on off shore islands. They are large nocturnal insects and are mainly herbivorous in the wild but are also known to eat insects.  I came across this one today as I was cleaning around a boysenberry bush.
