Cabins to Castles
Push the door and sneak in - the fireplace huge at one end, layers of cracked paint on the wooden mantle, an old tin rusted beyond deciphering lying on top. The settle by the wall, one leg wonky, same shades of pink and blue as the door. The dresser on the other wall, also blue, the last of the delft once so prized, now wearing a cobweby bloom. A faded flocked armchair pulled close to the fire, a well worn jacket draped over the top. A painting of the Sacred Heart, slightly askew, hangs above the perpetual light, its red beacon long since dimmed. On the other wall faded pictures of JFK and a smiling pope gaze back. A jumble of hobnail boots and a single wellie under the stairs, now home for the mice. Peeling lino on the floor, squashy underfoot, a tiny holy water holder nailed near the door. A mildewy calendar, 1996, tacked up over 20 years ago.
No I haven't been inside but it feels like I have.
