Afrata Beach - The Last Day
We first discovered Afrata Beach, Crete, in April 2003, when we came out for a week on a package holiday to Maleme. Staying in the same apartments was a couple from the next village to us in Wales who have now become our best friends.
Back in 2003, we only hired a two seater Smart car as they were new to the market and I fancied having a drive. I found Afrata beach by accident and we loved it, and invited our new friends to come with us if they'd suffer the indignity of 'going in the boot' of the Smart. So for a few days we did the 30 minute journey with Mrs BB and Mandy in the boot!
When we decided to come out to Crete for 6 weeks we thought it would be a good idea to stay on the west side of the island for the last two and chose Afrata as we knew it, loved the beach, and could stay with a retired British couple who run the apartments here since 2003 when we first spotted their sign.
We spent the afternoon on the beach, relaxing, ready for the homeward journey.
We walked the 100 metres to the local tavern in the evening only for the Greek owner to have invited their friends, a retired Welsh couple from Cwmbran (20 minutes drive from us back home) to meet up with us for surprise meal! Luckily we got on well and now have two new friends on the island that we will also meet up with back home!
