Candles and clutter

It's funny coming home to an empty house, sometimes. Because we often leave in a hurry - kids going to school, me going to work, maybe - home can seem a little like the Marie Celeste; there are nearly finished mugs of coffee on the table, butter-smeared knives by the toaster, towels on bedroom floors*.

But there's a second layer of detritus that is evidence of not having time to do more than the essential cleaning and tidying. These candles have been here on the table in the living room since we were all together for Abi's birthday ten days ago. And because I am so bloody sentimental and nostalgic if caught unawares, I had a 'moment' seeing them lying here.
