Argentine Fleabane

This plant appeared in a newly renovated herb bed next to the back door. I've been watching it develop over the course of the summer and at last, now that it's in full flower, I've been able to identify it as Argentine fleabane Conyza bonariensis. It originates in either central or southern America, and is one of the rarer species of Conyza now established in Britain. The most frequent species is Canadian Fleabane Conyza canadensis, though Guernsey Fleabane Conyza sumatrensis is spreading quite rapidly northwards and is equally common now in some areas.  The defining features of Argentine Fleabane include the softly hairy red-tipped bracts to the flowers, and the very narrow leaves.

Today was Alex's last day at Froglife, and started early as he still had to complete a summary of his traineeship, a task which had only been given to him the previous day, when he'd been out working on site all day. He had a good day and was rather touched that they'd laid on a farewell tea party for him. In the afternoon Ben completed his Open University application and submitted his request for student funding, so it felt very appropriate to have an evening of celebration in a local pub, along with a couple of Alex's closest work mates.  A fun way to end the week.
