Headstone Heaven

The old headstones line the path around St Mary's Church in Kingsclere and seem to be edging stones for the grass. There are still a few old graves in the churchyard so I wonder how they decided which ones to use for landscaping. Probably those relating to plebs (defined as a member of a despised social class, a commoner, a member of the plebs of ancient Rome. Also low-born, undisinguished, vulgar, and my personal favourite: vulgar-looking but does not include policemen) were used. I was going to enquire if they had any spare, but then thought better of it.
The church is huge given the size of the village and apparently the size, shape and its dominant position in the community, show that it is no ordinary village church. The original church was shown in King Alfred's will (AD 899) as a MINSTER serving as a centre of worship for a very extensive royal estate, and the seat of a community engaged in pastoral and educational Mission, associated with a place of occasional residence for the highly mobile royal household.
