Quod oculus meus videt

First Human Eyes

We had an interesting walk along the local canal footpath. Firstly we were joined for a good quarter of a mile by a family of swans, including seven cygnets (See extra).  As far as I am aware these are the same family I've noticed for much of the summer.  Pretty impressive to note that there has been no predation.  It isn't always the case.  I'm pretty certain these will be the brother and sisters of these little fellas, taken more than 5 years ago.

I was pretty confident that would be the blip of the day until we noticed this calf in an adjacent field.  Watching for a short period and it dawned on us that this was a new born.  It was so unsteady on its legs and mum was continually licking the hide.  If you look closely you should notice the afterbirth hanging from her backside.  We'd already noticed the umbilical cord hanging from the calf's stomach.  We started to get closer but the reaction of the mother suggested they were left well alone to bond and suckle.
