Crannog
Just back from dinner again in the hotel in Dunkeld House.. now of course we are meeting more interesting people on our tour and more and more of the inevitable connections. (Sat next to a woman whose nephew is married to a friend in Seattle) Both H and I have picked up the same slight cold and we are tired.. ... but there is lots to do. So one keeps going. The day ended with a lovely walk in the sun along the Tay River to the hotel from the town where we had lots of time to have lunch and look around... after that a short trip to a famous spot ( Hermitage. On the river Brann.) with waterfall. But the best part of the day for me was the morning trip to the Crannog center. a recreation of a 2500 year old (!) dwelling discovered under water in the lock Tay. The family who inhabited this was very knowledgeable and intelligent... to build it on stilts in the lake. ( in order to be seen and also to restrict access) From all the findings under water, they have figured out many possible ways that this people carved wood on lathes, drilled holes, wove yarn, and made fire. They lived well with many crops and livestock. It was fascinating. I chose to show the demo of drilling holes in stone ( for weights and beads) because we have found small stones with holes on our Canadian beach that are mysterious ... but only several hundred years old... not 2500!! Also some of our group with capes inside... So much is being discovered and then they will also get to watch what happens to it. And how. Many have been found in Scotland but just this one reconstructed which took 3 years ( and that was after using primitive tools for awhile and switching to chain saws!
Ok I'll stop, I assume this won't make it on the internet tonight from here ..it's not working well.. but will try and maybe in the morning... when we are off to Inverness.
Edit: my collage would not upload so I took off the 2 extra of the drilling process and inside view....in the interests of posting a blip
