Gwalia
Another daytrip from Kal, a mere 264 km round trip this time.
Gwalia was a mining town which was occupied from about 1896, but then the mine closed in 1963 and the town became deserted overnight. You can wander around the town and enter the homes that are (we are told) as the occupants left them. It certainly seemed to be the case, no twee little set ups here and it was all the better for it. I was particularly taken with this house and it's improvised garden fence.
There is also a museum which is full of quirky things. The centre piece is Hoover house, named for Gwalia's 1st mine manager, a man who later became the 31st President of the U.S.
