Doghouse Hill, Dorset
The view from Doghouse Hill, looking towards Seatown in Dorset, late afternoon.
You can see Golden Cap to the right, this is the highest point on England's south coast, and lies between Bridport and Lyme Regis. We walked in the other direction along the coastal path, to Ridge Cliff and Doghouse Hill. The cliff edge is very crumbly and dangerous along this stretch of coast, so I kept well back from the edge.
Evidently 150 years ago, this little hamlet was a busy fishing port by day, and just as busy with smugglers by night.
On our return towards the car, we went onto the beach and sat down for a while, watching the waves and the fishermen. There were several Portugese Man o' War washed up on the beach. I've just Googled them and evidently there have been quite a few sightings on UK beaches this weekend. These look like jellyfish but are a floating colony of tiny marine organisms living as one animal, and the sting is potentially lethal. The venom is used to paralyse small fishes which it then devours.
I've just found out that dogs aren't allowed on that beach! Ooops...... Didn't see any signs. They were on leads at all times though, and no "accidents".
