Old Ways
'Better finished than perfect' is my mantra at the moment. This morning we hung the quilted curtain over the back door, just in time to keep the cold out when the snow comes next week .... Then I dug out a little shawl I finished knitting before Christmas - that needs to be stretched out and pinned to shape. I've got as far as washing it and it is in the airing cupboard rolled up in a towel - I must remember to do it before it dries completely. And now I've got back to quilting a top that has been half-done for months, because I couldn't decide what to do next. Well, I have repeated my mantra and plunged in.
In the afternoon we had a walk. The sky was cold and dull, but the route was interesting. We started just on the edge of town - the picture is the Jed Water just below Townfoot Bridge. We went uphill to Ulston, and from there walked along the old Roman road, Dere Street, firm and dry and straight as an arrow, till we met the Jed again and followed the road past the rugby ground back to our starting point.
It's amazing how well the work of the legionaries has survived for nearly 2000 years - see extra.
