inspired by a noggin

I asked the joiner if I could have the spare bits of timber for our wood burning stove. 'Not until the end of the day', he replied. 'I might need them for the noggins'.

Noggin? Are you talking about 'Noggin the Nog?' I think an explanation is needed:

A noggin is a short timber that braces between two long timbers to give stability. Think of the letter H, with the noggin being the bar across the middle.


In some regions it is known as a 'dwang'. Now that sounds to me like something out of 'The Clangers'!
