Weller's Rock

We often dock at a place called Weller's Rock throughout the day. Sheltered behind the head of the peninsula beyond this rock was once the butchering place of hundreds of Southern Right Whales during the whaling days of old. Thankfully those days are long gone, but so are most of the whales too. Still, they are slowly coming back. I scan the swells each day looking for water spouts and mysterious humps breaching through the white caps. Still waiting on my white whale though...

I did see all the usual suspects though - shearwaters, giant petrols, shags and albatross riding the breezes. It was a slow day waiting for meager passengers though. So we watched brooding clouds and moody breezes that seemed to shift with the tides. Today the tides brought in thousands of tiny lobster spawn that colored the waters red and caught on the jetty. Hundreds of shrieking red billed gulls and elegant little terns congregated for the feast.
