Day 4 - San Antonio

This morning, we got up to see a fishing boat arriving at Galveston Harbour. It was being mobbed by the usual (for us) seagulls, but this one also had a large number of cormorants and pelicans. All sitting on and around the boat waiting for scraps. We drove to the beaches, as this is a holiday destination for many Americans. It was spookily empty. The shops were shut and the pier deserted. The temperature was 75 deg F, so warm and pleasant with a cool sea breeze.
Set off for San Antonio. Another 350 mile journey.
Arrived mid afternoon, found the hotel which was right next to the Alamo. Well done Mrs SoL for finding one so close. Spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the site. Very interesting to learn that 15% of the defenders were English. I counted 20 names at least. No sign of John Wayne or Richard Widmark. After our first Mexican meal of Fajitas (very nice indeed), we headed back to the hotel, appropriately named the Crockett Hotel. Found out that the Alamo was playing a film of the defence of the Alamo on a huge screen on the site that had been erected after we had left. Not only did we see the great American iconic location, we got to hear every explosion, shot and scream as it was retaken by Santa Anna. Got to sleep a little later than planned.
Off to the next stop in the morning to finally solve the assasination of JFK.
