Lachlan Macquarie's Mausoleum, Gruline

Many years ago when I moved to Canberra we lived in Macquarie, a suburb named after the Governor of NSW during the period 1 January 1819 to 30 November 1821. Our school uniforms featured the Macquarie tartan. I had no idea until I got here that Lachlan Macquarie, his second wife and his children were interred here on the Isle of Mull. He was born on a neighbouring island, Ulva, but left to join the army. After the death of his first wife, Jane, from tuberculosis, he returned to Mull and met his second wife, Elizabeth. The story is that he chose his own burial site, which after his death was neglected for many years. It is now looked after by the National Trust of Scotland and the National Trust of Australia (NSW).
