Sneak peak of the new Burke

We went to one of our favorite museums tonight to their “behind the scenes” for members.... but mostly to be first to have a look at the brand new building of the Burke Museum of  Natural  History and Culture.   http://www.burkemuseum.org
Clockwise from upper left.
-The director of the museum giving small group tours of the empty newly constructed building.  This wall will be covered with the French panels from the old museum cafe—- an elegant place all 4 grandchildren have spent much time with us enjoying an after school snack!  You can see the old Burke out the window which will be torn down, and people waiting for the tour.
-East side.  The building is basically a big rectangular  box.. with a shed style roof inspired by traditional structures of our coast Salish people.
- a fantastic complete Tyrannosaurus rex scull being uncovered after it was discovered 2 summers ago by the UW.  Yes, Fiona and Rexie  have watched this up close too!
-The west side.   It will have lots of light and dedicated spaces where people will be able to see the research work as it happens as well as galleries for their collections particularly NW Coast native.
- H with Robin Wright and her partner...Robin is the recently retired director of the Bill Holm center of NW art here... and Haida scholar.... we’ve taken all her classes at the UW and traveled to Haida country with her on a boat.
- One of 2000 boxes so far being packed up for the move next year to the new space.  I think this vessel is Peruvian .. for corn beer.... Most of the behind the scenes tonight in the old building basement was sorting, documenting and packing oriented.
It’s going to be pretty exciting!  But we have to wait about a year and a half for the opening!
