All in the Downs

It was a long day: started when I was woken about 02:30 by sirens and flashing lights. Turned out to be a fire on the top floor of a neighbouring block - could smell smoke at all, but the firemen stayed there for a couple of hours, running their high-revving engines the whole time (to lift the platforms, I guess). See first extra. So I didn't get very much sleep as I had to get up early for a train south.

The weather continued to look much the same the entire length of the country, misty and with a chilly wind from the east. Even in Brighton. (See second extra).

But it was all worth it; my nephew picked me up in Brighton and took us out to Peacehaven where we attended a unique and precious event; a house concert featuring Shirley Collins with Ian Kearey and also the Copper family (who also provided the house). Seemed like half the audience were old friends, some of whom I hadn't seen for about 15 years. What a glorious evening. (Very sorry for DaveH that he was unable to be there - he got sent lots of kisses and manly hugs that I shall have to deliver!)
