Sanger Windmill
Another perfect Orkney day. Hardly a breeze this morning and warm sunshine from early on we did a circular walk at the south end of the island taking in the famous puffin nesting site at Castle o'Burrian. We've walked here before and seen the puffins. Saw some today but just too far away for my camera.
This old windmill dates from the early 1800s. The windmill was used to thresh oats and bere barley and the kiln was used to dry the grain before it was ground at Rapness Mill. It's an amazing old structure with all the winding gear still there but not the sails.
The walk took us past cliffs and fields before dropping down to the beautiful beach at Bay of Tafts (first extra). There we encountered two ewes and five lambs. It became apparent, when the ewes gathered up two lambs apiece, that the fifth lamb was on its own. I imagine it had been handreared as it attached itself to us and followed us the length of the beach, bleating piteously. Otter was terrified! Quite the opposite of a dog worrying sheep (second extra).
Back to Pierowall and along to the fish shop for freshly landed monkfish for our evening meal. The sun is still shining, the sea is blue and I anticipate another beautiful evening watching dusk fall and the moon rise over the bay.
