Remembering Florence Nightingale

In village life in the Hampshire village of Wellow, the parish church of St Margaret’s posts a memorable date in May in the commemoration of nineteenth century champion of nursing Florence Nightingale.

Although born in Italy, her family made the village their home and on her death in 1910 she was buried in the church grounds; the monument on the left is the tangible memory of her association with Romsey, Wellow and the area nearby.

A commemoration service is planned at the historic church for the second Sunday of May, and parish vicar, the Rev Chris Pettet has arranged for a guest preacher, the Rev Dr Tom Keighley from Essex to speak of her life and her legacy to nursing.
