Diary of an Edinburgher

Lisbon Day Two

Where to begin? What a brilliant day we had.

We bought a three day pass for tours, which includes everything - buses, boats, trams and even funiculars. We've done two bus tours, one river cruise, and a wee old tram up the steep hills. Just the way it worked out - we'd get off one tour, and there would be the next one waiting. Great for my knees!

After breakfast (coffee and tarts) at the wee kiosk in our local square, we toured the modern part of town, which was mostly built for the Expo in 1998. We didn’t get off anywhere, but it was good to see it - there were some amazing modern buildings and wonderful tile murals.

Next we went to Belém, where the original custard tarts were made. It was very busy, but there were dozens of wee rooms, all with beautiful tiles. They were slightly different from the run-of-the-mill tarts, but I'd need to do more research to decide which I liked best.

This area was wonderful, with Jeronimo's Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries and the Belém Tower.

From there, we took the river cruise back to the city, where we had a happy hour in the sun in one of the many cafes in the huge square, finishing off with coffees and tarts in our local square.

Back to our apartment, tired but very happy. It's not every day you get to have custard tarts morning, noon and night.

(Took about a million photos... hard to decide which ones to use).

PS Can’t get some of these links to work. I’ll try tomorrow. Just Google 'em if interested....
