Diary of an Edinburgher

Lisbon Day Six

Today we headed to the Time Out' Market, which was nearby. And what a huge place it is. There is a kitchen area with a kids' cooking lesson going on. Loads of eateries, but we had our usual custard tarts and coffee. I lingered over mine, while JR went off exploring. We went upstairs, by chance, and there was a little unassuming market, with lots of individuals making jewellery, glasses made of bamboo, and shoes. JR was tempted at all of those stalls, and made a purchase at the shoe stall.

From there we walked up the hill, looking for a restaurant JR had read about. We eventually found it, Extra) but it was a pleasant search anyway - the city is full of wee plaças, with jacaranda trees just finishing their blooms, statues, marble seating and usually a kiosk. The pavements are beautifully tiled, though hazardous in their uneven-ness...

We found the restaurant, and it did not disappoint. In fact, it was the best food we've had here. Tapas menu, and we chose well. The waitress didn’t speak much English, and so to try to explain that I wanted some 'warm milk' on the side with my black coffee proved impossible. The young lady seating everyone came to our rescue. I looked it up in Google translate, listened to it a few times, then told her. She laughed. 'You've said it in a Brazilian accent!' She brought a Brazilian waiter over to hear my efforts.

On the way back down to our abode, we passed another bar on JR's research list. This one was like a faded French bordello, (though I’ve never been in one) It was jam packed with ornate mirrors, old lamps, armchairs and dressers full of quaint china objects. (Extra2). We had a wine and enjoyed the surroundings. When we left, we had a look through the rest of the establishment, which went on and on, room after room. it all looked a bit, well, not a place for a couple of old codgers to be in come night time. There was a pole, mysteriously, in the middle of one room. And a library which had a locked gate. And some very rude art work...

I then had a wee rest while JR shot off to explore more nearby shops, but she texted to say she'd patted a big schnauzer.

Last day tomorrow. And JR has it planned.
