Voting like Ancient Athenians

In our Religious Education class with the 3rd and 4th graders we discussed the democratic process today. We dressed up in togas and voted whether we should ostracize a member of our community of stuffed animals (think Survivor Ancient Greek Style). Apparently, back then, votes were cast on pieces of clay pottery. Bob was quite happy to shatter some unwanted clay pots for this purpose.

Apparently, one student abstained, so the vote was tied between Boxy the Arizona Bear and Fred the Teddy Bear. There will be a run off election next week.

I hope our US elections run smoothly despite the disruptions and displacements caused by Sandy. What bad timing for a storm to hit not only before election day, but more importantly just as winter cold sets in and so many people have non power and heat.
