Fish Lift
Our son-in-law told us about this quirky device at the dam in Bourg st Maurice so we went looking for it this morning.
The first extra shows a schematic of how it works. Basically the fish swim into a little chamber at the bottom and at preset intervals the chamber lifts the fish up and releases them at the top thus allowing them to get past the dam and swim upstream to their spawning grounds.
A practical solution which must have cost a fortune to build. In the background is the funicular that provides a similar service to humans wishing to go skiing in Les Arcs.
Second extra shows a couple of tourists making a fool of themselves at the top of the Petite St Bernard pass.
We are now in Italy near Aosta where the weather is disappointingly dull and damp.
Moving South tomorrow, hopefully to Tuscany.
