Chetham's Library..

..What a treasure, in the middle of Manchester!

So much to see in the Library and College House. Originally a fifteenth century manor House until being bought with the bequest of the late Humphrey Chetham in 1653 for use as a free library and Blue Coat charity school. It (the library) is believed to be the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world. The chained books are a sight to see, but for me, this pelican (along with all of her symbolism) just about won the day for photos. I was spoilt for choice between a rare copy of Newton's 'Principia' (which was opened for us to see), and an ancient well (the 'fox well'. I do love a well) and a beautiful fifteenth century door with an early 'cat flap' hole (to allow rodent eaters in!).

Still warm then, in this part of the country, and 27 degrees forecast for tomorrow :-/
