The Great Bernese Peaks
The blip shows the three main peaks in the Bernese Oberland: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau The first extra displays the famous Eiger North Face (page down the link for more). We took the Männlichen cable car (from close to our hotel) to its summit station, and then embarked on a long but well graded trail to Kleine Scheidegg (the images are from the approach--marked via GPS on the map). The trail was posted as walkable in 90 minutes; we took nearly four hours. (Only later did Marylee look up the distance on the internet: 5.8 km/3.5 miles!) We paused innumerable times, above all for photos and for flowers. We had only two species of bird: one small snow finch at great distance, and many alpine choughs (pronounced chuffs), crow sized with yellow beaks and red legs, usually flying high or swifly past. The chough pair in the 2nd extra stopped by for a few seconds, and I had my camera on its mountain setting (hence the lack of clarity). We took the cog railway from Kleine Scheidegg back down to Wengen,; despite our utter exhaustion we managed the short walk to our hotel.
