Chrysaora Fuscescens
Pacific or West Coast Sea Nettle. Those beautiful long dark tentacles paralyze prey, then move it to the frilly parts, and then up to the mouth for a yummy meal. Factoid:
The name Chrysaora has its origins in Greek mythology. Chrysaor was the son of Poseidon and Medusa and translates into he who has a golden armament, a reference to the stinging ability of these jellies. The species name fuscescens is the Latin "turning dark".
We are at the Monterey Bay Aquarium celebrating Mr S's birthday (see Extra for the Birthday Boy and Mrs Birthday Boy). Ironically enough, he wanted to go out for sushi afterward. We had a wonderful day, finishing up at our local jazz club hearing three vocalists:
Beautiful Friendship: Duets with Amy Cervini, Peter Eldridge & Sara Gazarek.
