Venice

A final bus to the airport was kindly denied us by the apartment owner appearing and driving us down there. Volotea has decided to run ninety minutes late but the airport was cool with half decent coffee and so the wait was not too painful.
An uneventful two hour flight landed at Venice and after dropping most of our luggage in the car, we caught the water bus into the city. This turned into an hour's tour of some of Venice and for a first timer like me gave one a feel for the place.
Our, very smart and comfortable, B&B was only a few minutes walk from the boat stop and after dropping stuff off we strolled the streets to find supper in a winebar recommended by our B&B hostess. It had a genuine Italian feel to it and provided as good a bottle of Italian wine as I have drunk.
The crowds were dwindling so on the way back we took in St. Mark's Square, or Piazza San Marco  for those with more Italian than me, which is exactly as you would visualise it. The adjacent Bridge of Sighs disappointed but the Doge's Palace was hugely impressive. I found St. Mark's Basilica equally impressive but not at all attractive, a funny combination of styles to my untrained architectural eyes.
