The Hordes Are On The Move
That included SWMBO and I who went up the new V&A building in Dundee ….. right next door to the Discovery and its rather impressive clouds (although I doubt they are a permanent feature).
We went to have a look at the exhibition on the great liners of the 1900's.
My first impression of the building was - it has some interesting viewpoints for pictures, but ………………
The ground floor consists of ticket desks, a shop and a café …….. that is it. The upper floor has, a shop, a café, one life sized designers 'model' of the new electric Jaguar car and two exhibit halls - one which costs to go into (the one we were there for of course!) and one which is free (and which had a queue over half an hour long to get into (balls to that I say).
When we went into the Liners exhibition it was purely dealing with the first class travel - there were a couple of mentions that there was 'steerage' and 'tourist' classes but nothing more.
A lot of it was really quite dark and reading the information cards was really hard.
The layout was very 'bitty' with no real 'flow' through the exhibit areas and you had to double back and forth to get from one area to the other. I suspect that the other exhibition area will be the same.
I am afraid that the whole thing was a bit of a disappointment -- the building, I felt, was designed by an architect who went with 'form over function' and who had no constraints placed on them over its future use. The exhibition just added to the feeling that arty farty snobbery is what the entire place is about.
I felt much more affinity with the station building across the road ….. modern, stylish and perfectly functional - and great fun to photograph.
Lots more pictures of exhibits and building START HERE.
After leaving Dundee we went over to Strathmiglo to visit one of H's daughters and her family who have been going through a hellish time with his ex-wife and the courts.
It was good to see them both and to hear that there is light at the end of the tunnel for them and the kids.
