Dee Estuary from St Mary's Isle
Today's the day ……………… to whet the appetite
A quick walk today on St Mary's Isle to the south of Kirkcudbright town.
It's no longer an island - more a peninsula of land - but at one time it used to be surrounded entirely by water at high tide. The earliest known building here was the Augustinian priory of Trail or Trellesholm, founded around 1200 by Fergus, Lord of Galloway, and dedicated to St Mary.
There was also the mansion-house of the Earl of Selkirk - and other interesting stories about St Mary's Isle - but no time today to go and explore. They will have to wait for another visit ……………………….
