but is it art?

D drew my attention to this collection of found objects by the beach near Tayvallich.

Earlier in the day, we had been up to visit the Cairnbaan Cup and Ring marks (see extra) which are thought to have been carved in the rocks about 5,000 years ago An interpretation board provided by Historic Environment Scotland mused about carvings, asking the question "But is it art?" before suggesting several other possibilities - astronomical maps?? number of sexual conquests of leaders?? Aids to finding food?? Their website concludes: "It’s been argued that the rock art should be regarded as a series of messages, with meanings dependent on their landscape". 


In other words, nobody knows, and it's possible that no-one ever will do.
