The Crested Pigeon..
We have always called them a top-knot pigeon, but apparently they're not... and they're found throughout Australia..
In the early days, the pigeon was a source of food for just about everyone on the land, even when we were children, and still on the menu in some restaurants I believe... and rather a delicacy..
They're prettier close-up so I've discovered - with my first 'bird blip'.
Flighty little fellows, this one here was showing off to his or her mate.
They're plump, small-headed, seed or fruit eaters with a large wing area and fast direct flight. Many species take off with an audible whirr of wings.
In Australia, there are two groups, one of plain colored usually grey or brown seed-eating, ground-living birds, and one of often brilliantly colored fruit-eating arboreal birds.
